World Cider Day is an international event celebrating an appreciation and love for cider, the alcoholic drink made from fermented apple juice, which is enjoyed in more than 20 countries around the globe. The historical beverage that has for the last several years experienced a renaissance continues to grow more popular every day. It is celebrated on June 3rdto symbolize the beginning of the apple cider season all over the world.
World Cider Day was launched seven years ago in 2013 by the members of the Association of Apple Wine and Fruit Juice Press Houses in Hesse, Germany. The organization considers themselves not only cider producers but also nature conservationists: without the local meadow orchards and their gnarled old apple trees, their cider would not exist; and in Hesse, there are about a million orchard trees. The trees, in turn, are an important habitat for flora and fauna and thus worth protecting. So, they believe, when we celebrate cider we also, in a small way, celebrate saving the world.
"Over the past seven years, the World Cider Day has become an integral part of every apple wine lover's calendar. Every year we count more than 35 campaigns from more than 10 countries worldwide. On World Cider Day itself, we usually add around 30 campaigns and 200 hashtags on Facebook. We started very small and are happy about the huge interest and the multitude of national and international campaigns", says Martin Heil.
Here in Japan, World Cider Day is officially sponsored by inCiderJapan and the Japan Cider Master’s Association; both groups dedicated to promoting cider in Japan and educating the public about the drink. By working directly with Apple Wine Association and other participating countries, we also aim to reach out to the rest of the world and show our passion for apples, apple farms, and cider – and invite you to join us in our celebrations!
